DNR Encourages Anglers to Continue Fishing Oconee River

(July 31, 2008) – Fishing and swimming in the Oconee River are summertime staples in southeast Georgia, but recently many people in the area have been led to believe that the river is not safe for fish or people. Dove Hunters May Have Opportunity To Bag More Birds This Season
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (July 24, 2008) – Georgia dove hunters may soon reap the benefits of a recent U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Regulations approval aimed at expanding dove season opportunities. USFWS's Service Regulations Committee recently adopted a change in the framework increasing the dove bag limit from 12 to 15. Georgia’s Wildlife Resources Division will propose a regulation change reflecting the new federal framework at the Board of Natural Resources meeting Aug. 27.

DNA Study Explores Sea Turtle Lineage and Outlook

Stay Safe On The Water During Fourth Of July Holiday Weekend
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (July 1, 2008) – The upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend is sure to be a busy one on Georgia's lakes and waterways and conservation rangers with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) will be out in full force to ensure the safety of everyone on the water. So far this year in Georgia, there have been 61 boating incidents resulting in 45 injuries and 7 boating incident-related fatalities in addition to 34 drownings on state waterways. WRD Conservation Rangers also have issued 74 boating under the influence (BUI) citations statewide. Boaters are strongly encouraged to use good judgment and exercise caution while on the water.

Blue Catfish State Record Trumped
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (June 20, 2008)– Fifteen–year–old angler Tyler Dodson of Carrollton (Carroll County) reeled in the new state record blue catfish from a private 18–acre neighborhood lake on December 24, 2007. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division (WRD), Dodson's 75–pound, 49‐inch catch trumps the former state record by more than seven pounds. The previous record weighed in at 67 pounds, 8 ounces and was caught in 2006 from the Chattahoochee River (below Columbia Lock and Dam) by James Franklin Tyus of Brinson (Decatur County).

Know Minimum Age Requirements before Operating a Vessel on the Water
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (May 15, 2008) — The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) reminds boaters under the age of 16 that there is a minimum age requirement to operate a boat or personal watercraft (PWC) on public lakes and waterways. Young boaters can satisfy the minimum age requirements of this law by either taking a boating safety course or operating a boat under the supervision or in the accompaniment of an adult. WRD encourages adults to NEVER leave young children unattended on vessels.

Last year, there were 142 boating incidents and 17 boating–incident related fatalities, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). Incidents can happen quickly and the chance of one occurring greatly increases if boat operators are either unfamiliar with or fail to follow the existing boating laws, or "rules of the road," that govern lakes and rivers.

Take Your Family Fishing for Bream

(May 15, 2008) – Many anglers will tell you that the first fish they ever caught was a bream – making it a good bet that if you teach someone to fish, that may be the first thing they catch. Recent Coyote Attack in California should Raise Awareness in Georgians

For the past two decades, coyotes have been present in all 159 of Georgia's counties and have become more common in urban areas, including metro Atlanta. To date, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division (WRD) has never received a report of a coyote attack on a person. Effort to Knock Out Invasive Flathead Catfish Species Resumes in Georgia's Satilla River
WAYCROSS, Ga. (April 24, 2008) – Last year's efforts to eradicate the effects of the unwelcome, invasive flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) on native fish populations in the Satilla River resulted in the removal of exactly 4,399 flathead catfish. This year, those efforts continue as biologists and fisheries personnel with the Satilla River Flathead Catfish Project team, a part of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Resources Division (WRD), kick–off the 2008 sampling season with the second round of tagging studies.

Right Whales Head North; Rise Seen in Winter Survey Totals

Columbia County Resident Ties State Record Yellow Perch!
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (April 11, 2008) – Angler Larry Poole, Jr. of Martinez (Columbia County) had more than just a great day of fishing on the Savannah River on February 24, 2008 – he managed to catch a fish that tied an existing state record! Poole reeled in a 2 lbs. 8 oz., 17–inch yellow perch, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). This ties the state record caught in Lake Burton in 1980.

Migrant Hummingbirds Returning to Georgia
FORSYTH, Ga. (April 7, 2008) – Hang up your feeders and they will come! Ruby–throated hummingbirds and other avian acrobats are returning to Georgia from their wintering grounds to the south. Ruby–throated "hummers" may travel more than 600 miles from Mexico to Georgia.
