Birds on the Beach

Many species of shore birds nest right on the beach. Beach nesting birds such as the Wilsons Plover and American Oystercatcher prefer to nest above the high tide line on wide, terraced beach flats or on the dunes. They lay eggs on the beach in shallow scrapes in the sand. After hatching the chicks hide on the beach or in the grass. Disturbance by humans or pets can cause adult birds to abandon the nests and young chicks, exposing them to predators and excessive heat from the sun.

To protect Georgia's beach nesting birds, remember the following tips:

  •  Leave dogs at home or observe the leash law while on the beach
  • Keep cats indoors
  • Move down the beach away from agitated birds
  • Avoid eggs when you see them
  • Stay in high traffic areas, birds are less likely to nest where crowds are gathered
  • Stay below the high tide line or on wet sand beaches
