WMA Road Closure or Accessibility Info

NORTHWEST GEORGIA (Region 1) 

  • Cohutta WMA: Rocky Flats Road (FS 630D) is closed due to storm damage and will re-open when repairs are completed.

NORTHEAST GEORGIA (Region 2) 

  • Chattahoochee WMA: Can access WMA from north or south, but cannot drive all the way through area due to storm damage. Click here for more info on USFS closures.  Martin Branch Road is closed through the summer.

  • Chestatee WMA: Boggs Creek Road and campground is closed indefinitely due to damage from tornado.  Repairs and clearing are ongoing.

  • Dawson Forest WMA:

    • The following roads are currently open for hunter access: Handicapped Road on Amicalola tract, Grant Road outer gate on Amicalola tract, Little Handicap Field Road on City of Atlanta tract and Forestar North Road. Railroad Road on City of Atlanta tract will be open during the first two weeks of 2013 turkey season.  Mill Road, although currently closed, will be open sporadically throughout turkey season based on weather conditions.

    • The parking lot to the Amicalola River Access Trail, located on Hwy. 53, temporarily is open (as of 8/30/12).  It is scheduled to close again in about a month for the final phase of the parking lot project.  

    • Gate Openings: Amicalola Tract - Handicap Road, Dove Field Road, Rock Cellar, outer Grant Road and Forestar South

    • Gate Openings: Wildcat Tract - Tobacco Pouch Rd., Honeysuckle Rd., Short Road 

  • Lake Russell WMA: Frady Branch Road closed.  Red Root Road: This road is open from Cannon Rd to the SE section near Farmers Bottom. Beyond that is closed indefinitely. 

EAST CENTRAL GEORGIA (Region 3) 

  • No current issues

WEST CENTRAL GEORGIA (Region 4) 

  • Joe Kurz WMA: Temporary road closures on  Germany Road and Pup Road due to the EF2 tornado that passed through on Monday evening March 18. Attached map shows the approximate path of the tornado and the road closures.  These closures will not adversely impact hunter access during turkey season.

  • Ocmulgee WMA: Check Station Road west of the check station (at the railroad crossing) is gated closed on Ocmulgee WMA due to flooding.  This area is expected to remain closed for the remainder of the 2013 turkey season. All other Ocmulgee WMA roads open for turkey hunting remain open at this time.

  • Oaky Woods WMA: A new unnamed road is closed on Oaky Woods in anticipation of a flood event.  This road connects the main portion of the WMA with the south tract along the Ocmulgee River.  It is closed and is flagged and has "road closed" signage.  All other Oaky Woods WMA roads open for small game hunting remain open at this time.

SOUTHWEST GEORGIA (Region 5) 

  • Chickasawhatchee WMA: Bridges formerly available on this WMA are currently closed. This includes bridges on 7 Bridges Road and Flat Loop Road.  Alternative routes have been established.  Please see linked map for details.

  • Elmodel WMA: Bridge formerly available on this WMA is currently closed. Alternative routes have been established.  Please see linked map for details.

  • Mayhaw WMA: Roads on this WMA are still flooded or not drive-able.  The area can be accessed by major roads. 

SOUTHEAST GEORGIA (Region 6) 

  •  

    Big Hammock WMA: The roads are closed just past the campground due to high water levels. They will remain closed unti lafter flood waters recede.

     

  • Bullard Creek WMA: The following roads are closed due to damage from recent flood waters; Branches Lake Road and Trussel Road.  The county road over Bullard Creek also is washed out and closed until the county can make needed repairs.

 COASTAL GEORGIA (Region 7) 

  • Due to the Altamaha River water level, many roads on Region 7 WMAs are flooded. While many of these roads have not been closed, users should proceed with caution and it is recommended that you do not attempt to drive down roads that are deeply flooded. For more information, call 912-262-3173.
