WMA Road Closure or Accessibility Info

NORTHWEST GEORGIA (Region 1) 

  • Cohutta WMA: Rocky Flats Road (FS 630D) is closed due to storm damage and will re-open when repairs are completed.

NORTHEAST GEORGIA (Region 2) 

  • Lake Russell WMA: Frady Branch Road is open seasonally for big game hunts and turkey season.  

EAST CENTRAL GEORGIA (Region 3) 

  • No current issues in this part of the state

WEST CENTRAL GEORGIA (Region 4) 

  • No current issues in this part of the state

SOUTHWEST GEORGIA (Region 5) 

  • Chickasawhatchee WMA: Due to excess rainfall followed by creek flooding, many roads on this WMA are impassable (areas most impacted include Pine Island, 7 Bridges, and Flat Loop). Hunters are asked to use caution and should not attempt to drive through flooded areas of the roads.
    • Bridges formerly available on this WMA are currently closed (includes bridges on Seven Bridges Road and Flat Loop Road).  Alternative routes have been established.  Please see linked map for details.
    • Due to heavy rains and flooding, Pine Island West Road is closed beyond the shooting range to the Dunlott Road gate.  Hunters participating in this week’s Adult/Child hunt (Dec. 26-31) are strongly encouraged to hunt in other areas of the WMA.  The shooting range will remain open and accessible.
  • Elmodel WMA: Bridge formerly available on this WMA is currently closed. Alternative routes have been established.  Please see linked map for details. 

  • Mayhaw WMADue to excess rainfall followed by creek flooding, many roads on this WMA are impassable.  Hunters are asked to use caution and should not attempt to drive through flooded areas of the roads.

  • River Creek WMA: Due to heavy rains and flooding, River Creek WMA has closed all roads leading to the Ochlockonee River.  Flooding is expected in the areas near the Ochlockonee River.  Hunters participating in this weekend's Adult/Child waterfowl hunt (Dec. 27) are strongly encouraged to hunt in other areas of the WMA.

  • Silver Lake WMA: Due to excess rainfall followed by creek flooding, the Hog Farm tract of this WMA is impassable.  Hunters are asked to use caution and should not attempt to drive through flooded areas of the roads.

SOUTHEAST GEORGIA (Region 6) 

  • Beaverdam WMA: The beaver pond at the end of the road behind kiosk has been RE-OPENED for Waterfowl Hunting.  This area recently was closed due to violators placing corn to attract ducks.  Individual(s) who bait negatively impact you, the hunter.  You can help stop this type of activity.  Report poaching or violations through the Ranger Hotline.

  • Big Hammock WMA: Due to extremely high amounts of rain and river flow, the gate to the east half of Big Hammock WMA will be closed.  The USGS Doctortown gauge predicts that the Altamaha River will reach 9' by Friday (Dec. 26) afternoon, which causes significant, impassible flooding of several stretches of roadway behind this gate.  River levels and road conditions will be monitored to open the gate as soon as possible.

  • Grand Bay WMA: Due to military training needs on the federally owned portion (Hwy. 221 tract) of Grand Bay WMA, that section will be closed to public access on the following dates:2014-2015 ;

Please NOTE that the federal portion of the WMA is temporarily closed due to high water and potential road damage (this is NOT scheduled on the main closure page for this area so take note if utilizing this area).

Grand Bay WMA is closed to vehicle access due to extensive amounts of rain and badly damaged roads.  Area will remain closed until dry enough to make repairs.  The area IS open to walk-in access for small game hunters.

  • Horse Creek WMA: Goat House Road and Crossbreak Road are temporarily closed due to water over the roadways. They will re-open once water recedes and repairs are made.

  • River Bend WMA: Both Beacham Lake on the south tract and Troup Lake on the north tract have been RE-OPENED for Waterfowl Hunting.  These areas recently were closed due to violators placing corn to attract ducks.  Individual(s) who bait negatively impact you, the hunter.  You can help stop this type of activity.  Report poaching or violations through the Ranger Hotline.

 COASTAL GEORGIA (Region 7) 

  • WMAs along Altamaha River: Roads within WMAs along the Altamaha River may be flooded and impassable. Proceed with caution and do not drive a vehicle into deep water. These roads may not be gated or listed as closed. Access to the McGowan Lake tract (Altamaha WMA) is limited and access to the lake is closed due to road damage by the rising water levels.
