Deer FAQs

Can our hunting club purchase some Northern strain deer to release on the property to improve the genetics of the existing deer?

In Georgia, the possession, purchase or sale of deer and other wildlife is illegal. Additionally, it is now illegal to import any cervid (deer) species into Georgia.

It is not possible to introduce enough animals from another population to have any lasting effect. To improve the quality of deer in your area, look at the existing deer population and the habitat. If your deer herd is not overcrowded or weighted toward young animals, look for ways to improve the available habitat year-round. For assistance with assessing your deer herd and the habitat, contact your local Wildlife Resources Division office.
